Blue Planet and Gandhi Composer George Fenton Dies Aged 76
The award-winning composer scored 28 music prizes and helped define BBC natural history television, including The Blue Planet and Planet Earth.
On Monday, prolific composer George Fenton died in London at age 76, management said. He was best known for scoring David Attenborough's The Blue Planet and films including Gandhi.
Born in 1949, Fenton transitioned from acting to composition in the 1970s, subsequently writing iconic theme tunes for BBC programmes like Newsnight and scores for numerous acclaimed films.
Throughout his career, he earned five Oscar nominations and won 28 awards, including Baftas and Emmys, while collaborating frequently with directors such as Ken Loach and Lord Richard Attenborough.
Management confirmed the death, stating, "We are sad to announce that George Fenton passed away unexpectedly today," noting the composer often described his career as a joyful accident.
He is survived by his wife Amanda, children Gemma, Grace and Bridget, and grandchildren including Lola, Audrey, Alfred, George, Frank and Beatrice, leaving behind a legacy spanning collaborations with David Attenborough and Sir Elton John.
