Common Vaccine Linked to 24% Lower Dementia Risk in Major Study
As we get older, we face an increased risk of both dementia and shingles – but what if a single vaccine could provide protection against them both? There's already convincing evidence that an older shingles vaccine, developed under the brand name Zostavax, can protect against dementia.
A vaccine against shingles would reduce the risk of developing dementia by 24% — that's what a study of more than 500,000 patients in care facilities, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, reveals. If this link is confirmed, about one in 17 cases of dementia could be avoided.
