Georgia Police Department Shut Down, All Officers Fired After Dispute Involving Mayor’s Wife
Whitfield County sheriff’s office is immediately taking over service after all officers were terminated, and officials have not explained the decision.
On Wednesday, Cohutta Mayor Ron Shinnick dissolved the Cohutta Police Department, firing all personnel and immediately transferring law enforcement duties to the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office for the north Georgia town of around 700 residents.
The conflict stems from complaints regarding former town clerk Pam Shinnick, the mayor's wife, who retained access to sensitive municipal systems after her termination. Sergeant Jeremy May described the firings as a "personal vendetta" following officers' transparency efforts.
Last week, town attorney Bryan Rayburn publicly assured officers their jobs were not in jeopardy, contradicting the sudden terminations. Rayburn stated he did not believe exercising First Amendment rights by filing complaints justified firing any officer.
Whitfield County Sheriff Darren Pierce confirmed his office will immediately assume policing responsibilities to ensure seamless coverage. Pierce stated residents will not experience differences in emergency response times, though some former officers expressed concern about potential delays.
The Cohutta Town Council will hold a special meeting on Friday to address the situation, where officials are expected to push for reinstatement of the police department and seek Mayor Shinnick's removal from office.
