Cruise ship stuck in port after shipping containers carrying bananas fall off cargo ship
P&O Cruises’ Iona, with 5,200 passenger capacity, remains docked as authorities recover 18 banana containers lost overboard, causing navigational hazards, officials said.
- On Saturday, December 6, P&O Cruises' Iona, cruise ship , stayed berthed in Southampton after 18 containers fell overboard near the Nab Tower lighthouse off Bembridge.
- Officials say the lost units came from the cargo ship Baltic Klipper, which flies the flag of Liberia, and included bananas, plantain, avocados and several empty containers with non-hazardous cargo.
- HM Coastguard said it is monitoring and co-ordinating with owners as broadcasts warn local shipping and Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team patrols after two containers washed ashore at Selsey beach on Sunday, December 7.
- Passengers have been left waiting as P&O Cruises works with the Maritime Coastguard Agency; thousands remain confined onboard Iona, the captain said recovery was delayed but the ship has clearance to sail Sunday.
- The public are advised to avoid the area and must report any wreck material to HM Coastguard’s Receiver of Wreck, with sightings to be called in on 0344 382 0560; updates will follow.
