56 Coast Guard members who refused COVID vaccine reinstated
The Coast Guard retroactively reinstated 56 members discharged for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine without exemption, restoring pay, rank, and benefits as part of a Trump executive order.
- On Feb. 12, a three-member Coast Guard Board for Correction of Military Records voted to reinstate 56 members separated for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine, a Department of Homeland Security official confirmed on Tuesday, with benefits and rank restored under President Donald Trump's executive order.
- The vaccine requirement, first mandated in August 2021, was later rescinded in January 2023, and President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Jan. 27, 2025, enabling reinstatement for separated members.
- According to the board, the Coast Guard discharged 274 enlisted members during the nearly 15-month mandate and reviewed 59 potential cases, granting relief to 56; the Return 2 Service team contacted the remaining 205 members, while other branches discharged approximately 8,700 service members.
- The Coast Guard will retroactively reinstate the 56 effective upon discharge, ensuring service records show continuous active service; the Pentagon is also reinstating members per the Executive Order.
- Amid a DHS shutdown over immigration enforcement, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem hailed the reinstatements as a victory for freedom while Vice Adm. Thomas Allan warned earlier this month about funding risks to 56,000 personnel.
