‘Ladli Behna Has Turned Out to Be Very Expensive’: MP CM Mohan Yadav to 12-Year-Old Bundeli Creator
Yadav said the women’s cash transfer plan has cost the state far more than expected, while the High Court reviews a petition to shut it down.
- On Monday, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav acknowledged he had not anticipated the "financial burden" of the Ladli Behna Yojana, calling the women's cash transfer scheme a "very costly affair" at a gathering in Bhopal.
- Launched by former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the scheme provided Rs 1,000 monthly to women aged 21 to 60 years. Yadav increased payments to Rs 1,500 in November, building on an earlier hike to Rs 1,250 before the 2023 Assembly elections.
- The budgetary allocation for 2026-27 reached Rs 23,882 crore, reported The Hindu. On September 16, the Madhya Pradesh High Court sought responses on a petition questioning whether recurring payments create lasting economic empowerment for women.
- Similar financial strain has emerged in Maharashtra with the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana providing Rs 1,500 monthly. Nationalist Congress Party leader Chhagan Bhujbal claimed departments face fund shortages, though state minister Ganesh Naik said the program would continue.
- The Bharatiya Janata Party manifesto promised to increase payments to Rs 3,000 per month. RTI data revealed the state spent Rs 76,261 crore over two years, recording 46.1 crore payments instead of the 39.7 crore originally projected.
