Congress Legislature Party Authorises High Command to Pick Next Kerala CM; AICC Observers Meet MLAs
AICC observers are recording the views of 63 legislators and alliance partners before the High Command decides among three contenders.
On Thursday, the Congress Legislative Party met in Thiruvananthapuram and passed a resolution authorizing the All India Congress Committee High Command to choose the next Chief Minister of Kerala.
Picking a leader has proven challenging, as Opposition leader Satheesan, AICC general secretary Venugopal, and former Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala remain in contention for the post after the Assembly election.
AICC observers Mukul Wasnik and Ajay Maken are conducting one-on-one meetings with the 63 Congress MLAs at Indira Bhavan to record their preferences for the next Chief Minister.
The Indian Union Muslim League, the Congress-led United Democratic Front's most important ally, has backed Satheesan, creating friction within the party's state unit among other factions.
This leadership contest is uniquely complex because Venugopal, a national-level AICC figure, is among the contenders, unlike past internal struggles typically limited to state-level leaders like Karunakaran.
