Clashes and arrests amid demos on anniversary of October 7 attacks
Police said five people were arrested for inciting racial hatred as around 100 pro-Palestine protesters marched and counter-protesters gathered nearby.
On Wednesday, October 7, 2026, Metropolitan Police arrested five people outside the Board of Deputies in Camden during protests marking the third anniversary of the Hamas-led attacks on Israel.
Around 100 pro-Palestine protesters marched from Kings College London to University College London, while counter-protesters holding Israeli flags gathered near Russell Square, with shouts of "scumbags" directed at marchers.
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting branded the demonstrations "shameful," while Education Secretary Lucy Powell urged students "to show compassion and protest on another day." Universities UK advised leaders to review security arrangements.
The Community Security Trust reported 1,926 antisemitic incidents across Britain from January to June 2026, the second-highest total for that period, as the Israeli embassy highlighted increased intimidation of Jewish people.
Amid the ongoing conflict where Palestinian deaths surpassed 74,000 last month, the Prime Minister described antisemitic behaviour as "disturbing," pledging his Government is "committed to protecting our citizens from vile hatred.
