SFA Looking Into Alleged Illegal Sale of Dog Meat in Singapore
The agency said dog meat imports are not approved and warned that illegal food products from unknown sources can pose food safety risks.
On Friday, the Singapore Food Agency is investigating social media allegations that dog meat was being sold illegally in Singapore, emphasizing all food imports must meet strict safety requirements.
Social media posts circulating in Vietnamese Facebook groups purportedly advertised 'vitamin gâu gâu,' a slang term for dog meat, with photos of raw and cooked meat whose origin remains unverified.
Denying involvement, Pham, a housewife residing in Singapore for about five years, stated her phone number was misused; AsiaOne confirmed it has not independently verified the allegations.
Reassuring her customers, Chan wrote, 'I would like to personally reassure our customers, friends and business partners that this allegation is completely untrue,' clarifying her company provides logistics services only.
SFA warned that selling illegally imported meat is an offense punishable by fines up to $50,000 and two years' imprisonment, emphasizing that food safety is a 'joint responsibility' for all.
