Civil society leaders call for halt to Canada-Ecuador free trade agreement
Several Canadian organizations and civil society leaders urge stopping the Canada-Ecuador free trade agreement due to environmental and human rights risks in Ecuador.
The agreement would eliminate tariffs on almost all Canadian goods entering Ecuador to increase Canadian mining investment.
Amnesty International Canada's Ketty Nivyabandi highlighted Indigenous Ecuadorian women’s concerns that the deal will worsen mining-related human rights problems.
Minister Maninder Sidhu said the agreement is modern and ambitious and will create new opportunities for Canadian exporters in clean technology and agriculture.
