Archdiocese Responds to Mass. Church's 'ICE Was Here' Nativity Display
The Archdiocese said the display replaces sacred images with political messaging and violates Church norms, amid prior activist statements by the parish priest on social issues.
- On Friday, the Archdiocese of Boston called on St. Susanna Parish in Dedham, Massachusetts, to remove the political nativity and restore the manger, saying churchgoers deserve prayer, not political messages.
- Over the past decade, Father Stephen Jasoma has used the manger for political statements, which he defended Tuesday as a way to "help people recognize the plight of people who are really in dire need, and how are we treating them," Rev. Stephen Josoma said.
- Visitors will see an `ICE WAS HERE` sign with a tipline at 617-370-5023, tucked behind protective glass and still on display Sunday at the creche at St. Susanna Parish.
- Local watchdogs and political figures condemned the display, with Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons linking such stunts to a more than 1,150% rise in assaults on ICE officers.
- The parish has not commented on compliance, and WHDH and the Herald report it's unclear if the sign will be removed, while some visitors praised the display, showing local division.
