Christmas tree chopped down hours after lights switch-on
Durham Police describe the cutting down of a decade-old village Christmas tree as mindless vandalism and appeal for witnesses to help identify the culprits.
- On Wednesday, Shotton Colliery's village Christmas tree was chopped down between 10pm and 11pm, causing huge upset among residents.
- Having been in place for over 10 years, the village Christmas tree was cut down at about 11.20pm yesterday, hours after the Christmas lights switch-on in Shotton Colliery.
- Durham Police said Mr Allen urged witnesses to contact via email: david.allan2@durham.police.uk, quoting CRI00653425, as he stated, `We are treating this incident extremely seriously and we will deal with anyone responsible as robustly as the law allows.`
- To assist the investigation, the force asked members of the public to quote crime reference number CRI00653425 and provide any CCTV or doorbell footage.
- With images in the public domain, Durham Police released undated handout photos of the felled tree and appealed to local residents to help identify those responsible.
