Companies in the Transnistrian region are beginning to pay VAT and excise duties on a part of the goods introduced into the territory of the Republic of Moldova from 1 September 2026. The decision is part of a gradual plan whereby the authorities of Chisinau follow the same tax and customs rules throughout the country.
Since 1 September, entrepreneurs in Transdniestrian have been paying VAT and excises for several categories of goods they import into Moldova, the first stage of the gradual elimination of tax incentives, which will be extended to other categories of goods as from 1 January and 1 April 2027. The authorities plan to fully harmonize the tax regime by 1 January 2030.
As of Tuesday, September 1, 2026, companies in the Transnistrian region will pay, for certain categories of goods introduced in the Republic of Moldova, Tax on Added Value (VAT) and excise duties.
Since 1 September, economic agents in the Transnistrian region pay VAT and excise duties for several categories of goods imported into the Republic of Moldova. The measure represents the first step in the process of phasing out tax exemptions that have so far benefited companies on the left bank of the Nistru.
As of today, 1 September, economic agents in the Transnistrian region will pay VAT and excise duties to several categories of goods imported from outside the Republic of Moldova. The measure is aimed exclusively at imports, without changing the regime of trade between the two banks of the Nistru, have specified several experts who participated in a public debate on this topic, Radio Chisinau broadcasts.
