Chinese Automakers Hit Record Market Share in Europe as Lawmakers Discuss Tariff Policy
- In August 2026, Chinese automakers moved 97,639 passenger vehicles in the European Union, achieving a record market share of 11.7 percent. Dataforce reported the total European market grew to 835,409 units.
- Surging demand for hybrids drove this growth, with plug-in hybrids accounting for 34 percent of Chinese-brand volume in August. Chinese brands now capture one in four hybrid sales across Europe.
- BYD leads the field with 26,103 sales, up 131 percent, while The Chery Group followed with 24,332 units, a 210 percent increase. SAIC Motor, the parent company of MG, ranked third with 21,132 registrations, up 32 percent.
- The BYD Seal ranked as China's top-selling model with 7,789 units, while the BYD Atto placed 43rd with 5,603 units. Both vehicles utilize the proprietary DM-i system to manage electric motor and gasoline engine power.
- Chinese-Built BEVs pay specific import duties reaching 35.3 percent on top of the standard 10 percent rate. Additionally, China was asked to voluntarily limit hybrid exports to about 15 percent of the European Union market.
