China, Philippines trade accusations over South China Sea
Manila said four Chinese research vessels were operating without consent, while Beijing accused Philippine personnel of an illegal landing on Sandy Cay.
On Sunday, the Philippine Coast Guard detected four Chinese research vessels conducting unauthorized marine scientific research within Philippine waters, violating the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea .
Tensions remain high in the West Philippine Sea, where the Armed Forces of the Philippines reported 48 Chinese fishing vessels swarming Iroquois Reef, a strategic area near the resource-rich Recto Bank.
Officials tracked the four research vessels using Canada's Dark Vessel Detection System, identifying advanced ships equipped for deep-sea exploration operating near Palawan, Batanes, and Pangasinan.
Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela, PCG spokesperson, stated, "We will not tolerate any illegal marine scientific research conducted without our government's consent," declaring the agency's intent to deploy aircraft and vessels.
Beijing accused five Philippine personnel of landing on Sandy Cay, labeling the action "illegal," while the South China Sea remains a flashpoint in ongoing territorial disputes.
On the front page of the major Philippine daily newspapers ‘Daily Inquirer’ and ‘Philippine Star’ published on the 4th, a large photo of a woman waving the Philippine flag while riding a jet ski was featured. The photo was taken as Representative Dada Kiram Ismula (41) arrived at the uninhabited sandbar ‘Sandy Cay’ in the South China Sea by boat with members of the private organization ‘Atin Ito’ (Tagalog for ‘our’).
