China a Better Influence in Latin America than US: Poll
China was rated positively by 65% of respondents, while 57% viewed the United States positively, in a survey of 19,200 people.
On Friday, the 2026 Latinobarometro survey showed that citizens in 17 Latin American countries now view China as a more positive influence than the United States, with 65% of respondents favoring China compared to 57% for the U.S.
Growing disaffection toward the United States follows President Trump's assertion of hegemony via the "Donroe Doctrine," a term blending his name with that of James Monroe, who declared the region an exclusive sphere of influence two centuries ago.
The United States remains more popular as a country with 63% holding favorable views, compared to 58% for China, though U.S. favorability has declined significantly from 73% two years ago.
Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic remain the only nations where U.S. influence is deemed more positive than China's, while a majority in all countries except Argentina approved of the U.S. capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Based on 19,200 face-to-face interviews conducted between May 7 and June 17, the report concluded that "China has more influence in Latin America than the United States," marking a significant shift in regional sentiment.
