China Launches Probe After Media Reports of Contaminated Diapers
On Monday, Beijing's State Administration for Market Regulation launched an investigation into diaper brands Huggies, Babycare, and Bibabebe following reports that products contained formamide, a rash-causing irritant.
The investigation follows a report last week from Economic Information Daily claiming diapers tested positive for formamide, a toxic substance that can also cause dizziness.
Huggies announced Sunday it is taking legal action over "certain false, misleading and malicious brand-damaging information," while all three makers stated third-party retesting detected no formamide.
Consumer safety remains a sensitive issue in China, where authorities are particularly vigilant following a 2008 scandal involving contaminated milk powder that left around 300,000 children ill.
The State Administration for Market Regulation is working with national health authorities on the probe and promised to "promptly" announce relevant information, though no investigation timeline was specified.
Layers of Huggies, Babycare and Bibabe brand have been tested positive for formamide, a substance that can cause irritation and dizziness, according to the newspaper Media Economic Information
