- On Friday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Jakarta for the inaugural China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue, meeting Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono to discuss economic, maritime, and security cooperation.
- This inaugural dialogue advances the five-pillar partnership established in 2023, covering political, economic, maritime, people-to-people, and security cooperation, as Indonesia maintains its "free and active" foreign policy between Beijing and Washington.
- China remains a major investor, contributing $3.9 billion in foreign direct investment during 2026's first half, though the China Chamber of Commerce alleged Chinese firms face "excessively stringent regulation, over-enforcement."
- Wang will later join Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun for "2+2" talks with Indonesian defence counterparts, aiming to "increase strategic communication, to deepen strategic coordination" as representatives of the Global South.
- International relations researcher Pieter Pandie of the CSIS think tank told AFP that Jakarta still leans "much more" toward Washington, cautioning against interpreting Friday's meeting as signalling a "realignment" toward Beijing.
