Chinese researchers modeled a lidar that could be placed on a rocket and calculated that at night, under ideal conditions, it was able to detect and accompany a low-profile F-35 fighter aircraft up to 61.5 km. The calculated range was 27.7 km during the day.
The theoretical model developed by a top missile supplier to the Chinese Air Force, with the company saying that—under ideal circumstances—the range of the system could dramatically reduce an F-35's ability to “survive” when faced with China's stealth fighter jets.
