China Goes Shopping in India as Exports Jump 39% and BRICS Trade Picks Up
Shipments to the four core BRICS economies climbed to $19.9 billion, with China and South Africa driving the gains, the commerce ministry said.
India's exports to the four core BRICS economies surged 34% to $19.9 billion during the first five months of fiscal 2026-27, establishing these markets as a key pillar of the country's export strategy.
Exports to China jumped 39% to $9.6 billion, while shipments to South Africa surged 58%, with the core BRICS grouping now accounting for 9.2% of India's total exports.
Beyond the bloc, India's shipments to Japan climbed 43% to $3.43 billion, while exports to Italy rose about 30% to $3.92 billion and sales to South Korea increased 22% to $3.21 billion.
Mineral fuels drove momentum, recording a $231.7 million increase in Japan trade alone, while electronics and aluminium also recorded healthy growth across markets.
Commerce ministry officials noted exports to Core BRICS nations are growing nearly three times faster than the broader grouping, as India prioritizes deepening trade ties beyond traditional markets.
