China Has over 700 Million Generative AI Users, Report Shows
About 76% of internet users use AI mainly for question-and-answer tasks, and office productivity use has more than doubled year over year, the report said.
- The China Internet Network Information Centre reported that China's generative AI user base exceeded 700 million on Tuesday, representing a 16 per cent increase from 602 million users at year-end 2025.
- Over the past year, China refined generative AI policies, shifting from technological challenges toward scenario-specific applications and regulatory governance while maintaining an inclusive yet cautious approach.
- Question-and-Answer services remain the most common use, with 76 per cent of users seeking answers; nearly half employed tools to process images or videos.
- As of June 2026, China is home to 10,740 companies involved in AI large models and robotics, with enterprises mainly concentrated in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang.
- Additionally, China's AI adoption has expanded beyond software, with 38.7 per cent of internet users purchasing smart hardware devices online during the past six months.
