Chimpanzee has ground-breaking spinal surgery to remove tumor

A chimpanzee named Mwelu underwent groundbreaking spinal surgery at Zoo Knoxville to remove a tumor pressing on his spinal cord, which threatened his mobility and quality of life.
Veterinary neurologist Talisha Moore and human neurosurgeon James A. Killeffer collaborated on the surgery, successfully removing most of the tumor.
Mwelu is currently recovering in a special quarantine space at the zoo, where keepers are providing him with extra love and care, as stated by zoo officials.
Dr. Killeffer stated that this operation appears to be the first of its kind performed on a chimpanzee in medical literature.
