Chester Co. Now Among Nation's Worst For Measles Cases
Health officials have administered more than 500 MMR vaccine doses this year as they work to contain Pennsylvania’s largest measles outbreak in decades.
Chester County's measles outbreak has reached 83 cases, comprising a significant portion of Pennsylvania's 977 total cases and five associated deaths statewide.
The outbreak began in April after crossing from neighboring Lancaster County, as vaccination rates have fallen below the 95% threshold required for herd immunity.
Pediatric infectious disease physician Evan Shirey warns children are developing severe liver problems and encephalitis; two vaccine doses provide 97% protection, yet only 4 of 977 statewide cases were vaccinated.
Health department nurses are conducting home visits and operating pop-up clinics, having delivered more than 5,300 vaccinations since the outbreak began in April.
John Goldman, an infectious disease expert at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, predicts the outbreak could persist three to six months, while Ohio and Texas grapple with their own measles clusters.
