Habs Notch First Playoff Win Since '21, Edge Lightning in Game 7
On Sunday, the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 to win their first-round series 4-3, with Alex Newhook scoring the go-ahead goal with 8:53 remaining and rookie goaltender Jakub Dobes making 28 saves.
The Canadiens, undergoing a full-scale rebuild after a 2021 Stanley Cup Final loss, eliminated a Tampa Bay squad that won championships in 2020 and 2021 but has exited the opening round for four consecutive seasons.
Every game in the series was decided by one goal, including four overtime contests; Montreal managed only nine shots in the finale, setting a franchise record for fewest shots in a win.
Montreal advances to the second round to face the Buffalo Sabres, with Game 1 scheduled for Wednesday in Buffalo; the Canadiens remain the only Canadian team still in the playoffs.
While it has been 33 years since a Canadian team lifted the Stanley Cup, the Canadiens aim to keep their dream alive against a Sabres squad that won the Atlantic Division title after snapping a 14-year playoff drought.
