At least 7 killed in India after hydropower project tunnel collapses
Rescue teams are using pumps and rafts as they search for one missing worker after water and debris trapped 22 workers, officials said.
An under-construction tunnel collapsed in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district on Thursday night, trapping 22 workers; seven died and 14 were rescued, leaving one worker still missing.
Sudden debris and heavy water flow entered the tunnel, trapping workers beneath; the project is associated with Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited and water reportedly extends nearly one kilometre inside.
NDRF and SDRF teams were immediately deployed alongside fire services; authorities deployed four water pumps and transported a raft from Srinagar to assist rescue efforts.
After intensive rescue efforts, 21 workers were brought out and hospitalized; teams continue searching for the one remaining worker amid rising water levels.
