Shorter field, single-point restrictions among changes coming to CFL

The CFL aims to boost touchdowns and improve game flow with field and scoring changes amid financial challenges affecting most teams, commissioner said.

  • Next season, teams will not earn points from missed field goals that go through the end zone, with a single awarded only if the returner kneels or is tackled in the end zone.
  • The play clock will automatically reset to 35 seconds after a play, replacing the current 20-second rule.
  • In 2027, CFL fields will be modified to be 100 yards long, with end zones reduced to 15 yards and goalposts relocated to the back of the end zones.
  • The CFL aims to increase touchdowns and improve game flow with these changes.
