UPDATE | NSFAS Placed Under Administration
Professor Hlengani Mathebula takes full control as the government cites governance failures, irregular spending and data concerns at the student fund.
- On Monday, Training Minister Buti Manamela placed the National Student Financial Aid Scheme under administration, appointing Professor Hlengani Mathebula as administrator to assume full control following prolonged instability and governance breakdowns.
- Manamela cited deep governance failures including irregular expenditure in the 2024/25 financial year, ICT system delays, and "serious data integrity concerns," while multiple board resignations reduced leadership to 7 members.
- "NSFAS therefore has implications not only for universities, but for the democratic state," the minister said, while confirming that student funding and allowances will continue uninterrupted during the intervention.
- Following the resignation of acting chairperson Mugwena Maluleke and other board members, Mathebula has assumed full control to address systemic breakdowns, with Manamela emphasizing the intervention is temporary but necessary.
- Mathebula, who served as board chair of the MDDA since 2021, previously left SARS in 2019 after being implicated by the Nugent Commission of Inquiry into tax administration and governance issues.
