Netflix Gets Its Own “Clips” Vertical Video Feed to Lure You Away From TikToks and Reels

The update adds simplified navigation and clips tailored to user taste, with Netflix planning podcasts, live programming and themed collections later.

  • On Thursday, Netflix launched a redesigned mobile app featuring 'Clips,' a vertical video feed, now available in nine countries including the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines and South Africa.
  • Following its TV redesign last year, Netflix designed Clips to serve as a 'daily companion,' filling shorter attention windows dominated by TikTok and Instagram Reels as the sheer volume of available content has made choosing what to watch one of the biggest challenges for viewers.
  • Clips vary from 30 seconds to over a minute with a dedicated curation team; the personalized algorithm shows different clips to viewers of the same series depending on whether they prefer action scenes or emotional moments, with built-in actions allowing users to add titles or share clips.
  • Netflix Chief Product and Technology Officer Elizabeth Stone said the platform is 'building on past learnings to deliver an experience designed for the way members want to enjoy Netflix on their phones: for the moments in between,' while Disney+ launched vertical video called 'Verts' last month and Peacock is launching live vertical video NBA and sports coverage with an AI avatar of Andy Cohen for Bravo viewers.
  • The redesigned app will expand globally over the coming months, with Netflix planning to add Clips featuring podcasts, live programming and collections based on genres such as K-dramas or interests like WWE, with live clips presented as playback rather than real-time streams.
