- On Monday, Houston-based CenterPoint disclosed that an unauthorized third party obtained customer personal information through one external-facing system, reporting the incident in a Form 8-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
- A post on a cybercrime forum claimed to offer 7.49 million files extracted via a poorly secured API; among the allegedly compromised data are customer names, contact details, billing data, and the last four digits of Social Security numbers.
- Despite the incident, Houston-based CenterPoint stated that its electricity and gas services remain operational and undisrupted; the Company is working with third-party experts to "determine the scope of customers and personal information affected."
- Company officials reported the matter to law enforcement and intend to notify affected customers and regulatory authorities as required by law. When ABC13 asked for specific details, officials directed inquiries back to the SEC filing.
