Celebrating a wedding amid the Ebola outbreak: No kisses or close contact, but love lives here
Authorities limited the ceremony to 50 guests as Congo’s Ebola outbreak spread, forcing the couple to skip kisses, embraces and a crowded dance floor.
On Saturday, Solange Hahati and For Jean Claude married at the Catholic Church in Bunia, Congo, adapting their wedding to comply with strict Ebola safety measures limiting public gatherings.
Congo is battling an Ebola outbreak with 515 confirmed cases and 91 deaths, prompting local authorities to enforce social distancing and restrict public events to slow the disease.
While the couple planned for 300 guests, Hahati told The Associated Press that authorities allowed only 50 people inside the Mass, forcing them to modify their celebration.
There were no kisses or crowded dance floors during the ceremony, as the couple moved part of their reception Outside where guests could spread out more easily.
Rev. Aim Lokanabego noted Some families have postponed weddings, as the Church cancels events involving higher risks of exposure to the rare Bundibugyo virus.
