Cavs promote Akron native Brandon Weems to GM, make other front office moves

  • On Friday, the Cleveland Cavaliers promoted Brandon Weems to general manager, elevating the longtime staffer after he served as assistant general manager since 2022. Weems will report to team president Koby Altman.
  • An Akron native and 2004 St. Vincent-St. Mary High School graduate, Weems joined the organization in 2015 as a scout. He rose through various personnel roles, serving as director of scouting and senior director of player personnel before this promotion.
  • Although Weems is a childhood friend of LeBron James, the superstar signed with the Philadelphia 76ers this offseason. James' agent, Rich Paul, described Weems as "basically LeBron's brother" during the team's recruitment efforts.
  • Weems fills the vacancy left by former general manager Mike Gansey, who joined the 76ers in May. The Cavaliers also elevated Jon Nichols to associate general manager, alongside new assistant general managers Brendon Yu and José Calderón.
  • The Cavaliers also hired Dashiell Flynn as chief technology officer of basketball operations from Amazon Web Services. Flynn will lead the "development and integration of new technologies" to support the team's strategic initiatives.
