Caught on camera: Troopers rescue elderly man from burning home
Body camera video shows Trooper James Bertram entering the smoke-filled house and helping the trapped man escape before a second trooper carried him out.
- New York State Trooper James Bertram rescued an 80-year-old man from a burning home in Oswegatchie shortly after 11 a.m., entering the smoke-filled structure and guiding the resident to safety.
- Responding to dispatch calls on Haggert Road, Bertram approached the home as heavy fire and smoke poured from windows, then crawled on his hands and knees through the interior to locate the trapped resident.
- State Trooper Craig Thornhill arrived at the scene and assisted Bertram after they escaped, carrying the man to the road for transfer to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center and later Upstate University Hospital.
- The man's injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. "The New York State Police recognize Trooper Bertram and Trooper Thornhill for their quick response and courageous actions during the incident," state police said.
- Multiple fire departments from Ogdensburg, Morristown, Hammond, Brier Hill, and Heuvelton responded alongside the county sheriff's office as officials launched an investigation into the fire's cause.
