Caught on camera: Sheriff’s Office drone records suspect shooting at it
The drone recorded the suspect firing at least twice, and deputies used the footage to make a quick arrest, the sheriff’s office said.
On Saturday, a Lee County man was arrested for allegedly firing a BB gun at a Lee County Sheriff drone deployed to assist in a bear search in Lee County, Florida.
The Drone First Responder program was deployed to locate a bear when the operator spotted a group of men appearing to shoot a firearm into a wooded area.
Footage released by the Lee County Sheriff shows the suspect pointing the BB gun and firing twice at the aircraft. Since the drone was recording, deputies utilized real-time Information to facilitate a quick arrest.
The Sheriff noted that firing a weapon at an aircraft is a federal crime. Office officials confirmed the incident occurred while the drone was actively assisting deputies with the bear search in Florida.
LCSO clarified that strict regulations govern drone use and they are not used for random surveillance of the community. The Sheriff maintained that The DFR program serves as a valuable asset for officer safety.
