She Created The Quiet Storm, Built Urban One And Changed Black Media Forever — Celebrating Cathy Hughes On National Radio Day
Hughes said she built Urban One to counter negative coverage and give Black audiences a platform, as the company grew into the largest Black-owned multimedia firm.
- On July 15, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser presented media mogul Cathy Hughes with the Key to the City, recognizing her contributions to the media industry and Black community over 55 years.
- Collaborating with then-student Melvin Lindsey in 1976, Hughes developed the influential 'Quiet Storm' format at Howard University, revolutionizing FM radio and proving Black consumers were a pivotal demographic.
- In 1980, Hughes and her husband, Dewey Hughes, purchased WOL-AM and envisioned a 24-hour serious Black news talk show that eventually expanded into Urban One, the nation's largest Black-owned multimedia company.
- As a general sales manager, Hughes increased revenue by approximately $3 million and led Urban One to operate over 70 stations, once spending 18 months sleeping in her office to maintain the morning broadcast.
- "I am always thinking in terms of what's next," Hughes said, emphasizing her focus on future growth rather than past accolades as she continues amplifying Black voices through Urban One.
