Carney unveils new housing projects in his own riding of Nepean
The partnership will fast-track construction and add family-sized homes as Ottawa and the federal agency target more than 3,000 units.
- On Thursday, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Ottawa is unlocking $1.7 billion in federal funding, with the Build Canada Homes agency approving eight projects expected to deliver more than 1,100 rental units.
- The City of Ottawa signed a deal with Build Canada Homes on Wednesday to deliver about 3,000 new homes, building on the $13-billion fund The Liberals launched last September.
- At a Barrhaven construction site on Geyser Place, Carney noted the government scrapped GST on homes under $1 million, which could save buyers up to $130,000 through combined federal and provincial relief.
- Housing Minister Gregor Robertson and Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe joined the prime minister to add 100 units to the plan, with construction expanding into Centretown, Sandy Hill, Overbrook, and Lincoln Heights.
- The agency has committed to building more than 10,000 units in seven months, with construction focusing on three- and four-bedroom homes and start targets ranging from this summer to early in 2027.
