Researchers discovered two banks of rhodoliths near Ipanema, in Rio de Janeiro. One has about 20,000 square meters and both will be studied with an underwater robot and a sonar.
Ipanema has evidence that the bottom of the oceans is less known than the surface of the Moon. Researchers have found only four kilometers from the beach, in the vicinity of the Cagarras Islands, entire pink painted ecosystems. They are rodolite banks, coral-like reefs, but built by calcareous algae and serve as cradles and homes for fish, crustaceans, molluscs and a number of other marine animals.
Ipanema has evidence that the seabed is less well researched than the moon's surface.
