Capitals Sign Coach Spencer Carbery to a Multiyear Contract Extension
Carbery earned the extension after guiding Washington to a 51-win season and winning the Jack Adams Award, the NHL's coach of the year honor.
On Thursday, The Washington Capitals announced a multiyear contract extension for head coach Spencer Carbery, keeping the 44-year-old coach in place after a challenging season.
Carbery earned the Jack Adams Award during the 2024-25 season when he guided the Capitals to the top seed in the Eastern Conference and their first playoff series win since 2018.
Despite missing the playoffs this year, the Capitals fielded the 21st youngest roster in the NHL according to Elite Prospects, as Carbery developed young players alongside veterans Alex Ovechkin and Tom Wilson.
Capitals general manager and senior vice president Chris Patrick said, "We are pleased to extend Spencer to a new multiyear contract," emphasizing his role developing young players and earning veteran trust.
Looking to the 2026-27 season, the Caps face free agency decisions for forwards Hendrix Lapierre and Connor McMichael, alongside their 40-year-old captain Ovechkin, who has yet to announce his plans.
