Canpotex Announces $500M Port of Vancouver Investment for Potash Shipping
The project will refurbish and replace equipment to improve shipping capacity for Saskatchewan potash exports, with Canpotex saying it will support decades of supply.
On Friday, Canpotex announced a $500 million investment to upgrade its Neptune Bulk Terminals at the Port of Vancouver, aiming to boost annual potash export capacity to 11 million tonnes.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe attended the announcement, reinforcing the province's position as home to 11 of 12 active potash mines in Canada and supporting economic growth across the country.
Infrastructure improvements include replacing ship loaders and conveyors to modernize terminal operations, with construction expected to be completed in 2028.
Vancouver Fraser Port Authority President and CEO Peter Xotta described the investment as "significant," noting terminals like Neptune play an outsized role in Canada's goal to double exports to non-U.S. markets.
Amid global competition, U.S. President Donald Trump pursues a "massive Deal" to purchase cheaper potash from Belarus, while Melbourne-based BHP's Jansen project begins production next year, adding to market volatility.
