Canadian Olympic hockey star Claire Thompson retires to pursue medical career
The 28-year-old won Olympic gold in 2022, silver in 2026 and an Olympic points record for a defender before returning to NYU medical school.
On Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026, Canadian defender Claire Thompson announced her retirement from professional hockey to pursue medical school at New York University . The 28-year-old shared the decision via Instagram and The Athletic.
Thompson previously established herself as a premier international defender, winning Olympic gold at the 2022 Beijing Games and silver at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. She set an Olympic record for points by a defender with 13 in Beijing.
Beyond the international stage, she won the 2025 Walter Cup with the PWHL's Minnesota Frost. Thompson spent her most recent season with the expansion Vancouver Goldeneyes before stepping away.
With her transition from professional athletics to academics, Thompson aims to become an orthopedic surgeon. She is currently enrolled at NYU to begin her medical training.
The defender exits the sport having recorded 17 points across 14 career Olympic games. Thompson leaves behind a distinguished record in both international and professional hockey before focusing entirely on her medical studies.
