Canada's Kayla Cross Upsets Britain's Katie Boulter at NBO for First WTA
The wild-card entrant saved four set points and will face Ann Li in the second round after her breakthrough win.
On Aug. 3, 2026, Kayla Cross upset Britain's Katie Boulter 7-6 , 7-5 at the National Bank Open in Toronto, securing her first career WTA victory.
Playing just her third tour match as a wildcard entry, Cross entered the tournament ranked 172 after sitting at 262 some 12 months ago.
Spurred on by a home-soil tennis crowd at centre court, Cross fought off four set points in the first set before serving out the win. "Definitely in shock," Cross said.
Cross advances to the second round to face seed Ann of the United States, while Bianca Andreescu fell 7-5, 6-4 to Czechia's Nikola Bartunkova in opening action.
Toronto's Katherine Sebov advanced earlier in the tournament, while Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., the only seeded Canadian, plays her first match on Wednesday.
