Canada’s Branstine Closes in on U.S. Open Berth with Win over Fruhvirtova
Carson Branstine converted all five break points and hit 22 winners to move within one victory of the women’s main draw.
On Wednesday in New York, Canada's Carson Branstine reached the final qualifying round of the U.S. Open after defeating Czechia's Linda Fruhvirtova 6-4, 7-5.
Born in California, Branstine represents Canada and is seeking to improve on her U.S. Open performance after losing in the first qualifying round last year.
The 25-year-old converted all five of her break point chances and hit 22 winners to Fruhvirtova's eight. Fruhvirtova hindered her cause with 10 double faults.
Branstine will face Robin Montgomery of the United States on Thursday for one of the remaining spots in the main draw.
Elsewhere, 2019 U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., faced Ukraine's Veronika Podrez. Alexis Galarneau of Levis, Que., and Liam Draxl of Newmarket, Ont., also competed in qualifying.
