Canada’s Alert Ready system to be tested in most provinces today
The twice-yearly test will send alerts to TVs, radios and compatible wireless devices, and officials say it helps ensure the system works properly.
On Wednesday, most Canadian provinces and territories conduct the semiannual Alert Ready test, broadcasting siren tones and test messages across TVs, radios, and compatible wireless devices to verify system functionality.
Alert Ready issued 28 alerts as of April 30 for emergencies including Amber Alerts and tornadoes, demonstrating why routine tests ensure the system works and raises public awareness of this critical warning mechanism.
While most regions participate today, Saskatchewan cancelled its test and Quebec has none scheduled; Ontario's test is set for Thursday, May 7 at 1:55 p.m. EDT, with alert vibrations lasting eight seconds and potential acknowledgment required.
Recipients cannot opt out of test or emergency alerts, though users will be notified the alert is a test and do not need to respond; the exercise confirms devices are working properly to receive warnings.
Users who do not receive the alert should check their device's notification settings for troubleshooting; more information about Alert Ready and the specific alert tone is available on the Alert Ready website.
