Canada won’t even hit 2030 emissions target by 2050, new study suggests
The institute says recent federal policy changes have left Canada with only 10.3% of its 2005 emissions reductions achieved.
- On Friday, the Canadian Climate Institute released a report suggesting Canada will miss its 2030 Paris Agreement emissions target. Rick Smith, the institute's president, stated the country would even "be lucky to hit its 2030 target in 2050."
- Prime Minister Mark Carney has faced accusations of climate policy backsliding since taking office in March 2025, eliminating the consumer carbon price and weakening industrial pricing through an Alberta agreement. His government is also moving to repeal the electric vehicle sales mandate and cancel the oil and gas emissions cap.
- Environment Commissioner Jerry DeMarco reported in 2024 that Canada achieved only a 10.3 per cent emissions reduction from 2005 levels over 21 years, making it the worst-performing G7 country. This falls far short of the 30 per cent reduction goal set under Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
- Responding to the study, the office of Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin stated Ottawa remains committed to net-zero by 2050 through "a pragmatic and durable approach." Press secretary Keean Nembhard cited the planned North Coast Transmission Line, which will reduce emissions by three million tonnes annually.
- Smith noted that while the country has proven it can cut emissions while growing the economy, current policies lack specifics, calling them "aspirational comments" with "no specific government policy attached." Canada previously targeted 40 to 45 per cent reduction by 2030, but implementation gaps persist.
