Canada silent as Israel clears itself in death of aid workers, including a Canadian
Anita Anand said Israel’s refusal to open a criminal probe leaves families without answers after the April 2024 strike killed seven aid workers.
On Thursday, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand condemned Israel's decision to decline a criminal investigation into April 2024 airstrikes that killed seven aid workers, including Canadian Jacob Flickinger, calling the lack of accountability "unacceptable."
Wednesday's military statement claimed commanders mistakenly identified the World Central Kitchen convoy as armed Hamas operatives, concluding the strike "did not raise reasonable suspicion of criminal misconduct" despite vehicles displaying the organization's logo visible from the air.
World Central Kitchen rejected the military's account, stating it "conflates different timelines and events, muddies the story and shifts the blame." The military simultaneously cleared itself regarding deaths of Doctors Without Borders staff in separate 2023–2024 incidents.
On World Humanitarian Day, Foreign Minister Penny Wong called the decision "especially insulting," directing Australia's Ambassador to Israel to convey outrage while summoning Israel's Ambassador to Australia, Hillel Newman, to address next steps.
Also Thursday, Canada joined European peers in condemning Israeli settlement moves in the West Bank, warning businesses of legal consequences because international law deems such projects illegal per the United Nations Security Council.
