Canada reacts to World Cup star's gruesome injury
A leg injury to Ismael Koné stunned the crowd after Canada’s early scoring burst, and he is out for the rest of the World Cup.
On Thursday, Canada defeated Qatar 6-0 at BC Place, but midfielder Ismael Koné suffered a fractured fibula and tibia during the match. Canada Soccer confirmed Koné underwent surgery and will miss the remainder of the 2026 World Cup.
Qatar's Assim Madibo received a red card for the tackle from behind that sidelined Koné. Manager Jesse Marsch and staff were audibly incredulous on the broadcast, questioning why the challenge was initially ruled only a foul.
Shortly after play resumed, teammate Nathan Saliba scored and celebrated by holding up Koné's jersey to the crowd. The stadium at BC Place fell almost completely silent during the injury, a stark contrast to the earlier roar.
"From a talent and tactical perspective, it weakens us in the tournament," manager Jesse Marsch said of Koné's absence. The physical midfielder, who dictates Canada's pace, is expected to miss 4-5 months of play.
Canada faces Switzerland on Wednesday, June 24, in Vancouver, with a draw securing first place in Group B. The result would keep the team in Vancouver for the round-of-32 match on July 2.
