Canada provides $5M to Nepal relief efforts as search for missing Canadians continues
Canada is funding emergency relief as search teams look for 32 Canadians and permanent residents still unaccounted for after flooding in Nepal.
On Friday, Canada announced $5 million in humanitarian aid for Nepal following catastrophic flash flooding and mudslides along the Himalayan border on Wednesday.
Glacial collapse triggered flash flooding along the Bhotekoshi River, killing at least 570 people and destroying critical infrastructure including bridges, roads, and hydropower facilities.
Secretary of State for International Development Randeep Sarai reported that 100,000 people require urgent humanitarian aid, while more than 1,900 people—including 32 Canadians or permanent residents—remain unaccounted for.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand deployed five consular officials to Kathmandu, describing the situation as "Nepal is facing a devastating humanitarian emergency with catastrophic damage."
Canada's $5 million contribution will support the Red Cross and partner organizations delivering relief, though authorities warned casualty figures will "likely change" as water levels rise with expected rain.
