Fire Ban Coming Into Effect for Coastal B.C. This Week
The ban covers campfires, backyard burning and industrial burning as fire indices rise and suspected wildfires are linked to open-fire use, officials said.
- The Coastal Fire Centre will implement an open-fire ban across the Coastal Region starting Thursday, May 7, at noon, prohibiting campfires and larger fires except in Haida Gwaii.
- Over the past three weeks, the Coastal Region has experienced "increasing fire indices," "very little rain," and higher than normal temperatures, prompting the early restrictions.
- Suspected wildfires caused by open fire use have struck the Eastern Fraser Valley near Cultus Lake and Chehalis Lake, and Mid-Vancouver Island near Horne Lake, Coombs, Hilliers, and Ladysmith.
- Those violating the ban face a $1,150 ticket or $10,000 administrative penalty; convictions carry fines up to $100,000 and one year in jail.
- Coastal Fire Centre information officer Julia Caranci noted the prohibition is "definitely earlier than it has been the last couple of years" but not unprecedented, as no appreciable rain is forecast.
