Cambodia’s 72-year-old king says he has prostate cancer and is getting treatment in China
Doctors in Beijing prescribed up to two months of hospital treatment after the 72-year-old monarch said he has prostate cancer.
On Friday, Cambodia's King Norodom Sihamoni announced he has prostate cancer and will remain in Beijing for medical treatment, according to a statement posted on his Facebook account.
King Sihamoni traveled to China in late February with his mother, Queen Mother Norodom Monineath, for routine medical checkups when doctors at a state hospital in Beijing confirmed the diagnosis.
Before taking the throne in 2004, the King served as Cambodia's ambassador to UNESCO and worked as a classical ballet dancer, maintaining a largely ceremonial role in his country.
Doctors have prescribed hospitalization of up to two months for treatment, with the King intending to extend his stay in China for between one and three months on medical advice.
The King's father, Norodom Sihanouk, also received cancer treatment in Beijing and lived until 2012, dying at age 89 after relocating to China following his abdication.
