Cambodia turns to Singapore, Malaysia for fuel as Vietnam, China restrict supplies

Cambodia increased fuel imports from Singapore and Malaysia by 25% year-on-year amid export bans from Vietnam, China, and Thailand, with a third of stations closed since last week.

  • Energy Minister Keo Rottanak told Reuters on Mar 18 that Cambodia is importing more fuel from Singapore and Malaysia to offset shortfalls from Vietnam and China.
  • Faced with regional export limits, Vietnam and China have restricted fuel exports until at least end-March, and those limits are compounded by squeezed global availability linked to the US-Israeli war on Iran, Energy Minister Keo Rottanak said.
  • Trade figures indicate gasoline and diesel exports from Singapore and Malaysia in the first 18 days of this month were 25 per cent higher than last year, according to Kpler.
  • About a third of the 6,300 petrol stations have shut since last Wednesday as authorities investigate hoarding, and Cambodia’s lack of refineries and less than a month’s fuel supply limit buffers, though partnerships with Total and Chevron mitigate some risk.
  • Despite some shielding from renewables, Rottanak said Cambodia is not yet 100 per cent insulated and urged faster ASEAN interconnection grids, giving no specifics on supplies from Singapore and Malaysia.
