Call for EU laws to ban trade with Israeli settlements
The signatories, including all of Ireland's MEPs, seek to pressure von der Leyen ahead of her State of the Union address to adopt trade restrictions.
- Over 100 European Parliament members signed an open letter on Tuesday urging European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to propose new EU laws banning trade with Israel's illegal settlements in Palestinian territories.
- Last year, von der Leyen proposed suspending the EU-Israel Association Agreement and sanctioning Israeli officials, yet almost none of those measures were adopted as Europe lagged behind allies implementing trade bans.
- British Foreign Minister Ed Miliband supported similar trade measures last week. Prior calls included a July appeal by 71 MEPs and a June statement from 460 former officials, ambassadors, and European commissioners.
- Under the Genocide Convention, awareness of a 'serious risk' of genocide triggers a 'duty to prevent,' compelling the European Union to suspend the Association Agreement and sanction Israeli officials under international law.
- Von der Leyen should use tomorrow's State of the European Union address to propose an EU-wide trade ban and actively engage Germany and Italy to secure the necessary qualified majority for approval.
